The movie Gangs of Wasseypur is a crime drama directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film is based in and around the town of Birganj. The basic plot revolves around Birganj, a small village in Bihar, India. In this small village, which has seen its fair share of crime and bloodshed over the years, live the Bhumihar caste people. These people have been living peacefully so far but their peace is about to come to an end. Why? Because these Bhumihar citizens are going to witness some serious gang wars that would change the face of Wasseypur forever! The movie starts with five Bhumihar youths on their way home from one such meeting at a local temple called Chandi Para. They talk about how they can unite all the Bhumihars under one banner and establish supremacy over other castes in this area. What does it matter if it’s only for five people? After all, together they are strong! Soon enough, some rival gangs from Birganj also arrive there and start provoking each other. One person asks another where he got his money from that was spent on an expensive car like that just to walk home? He wanted to know why he couldn’t afford something as simple as an auto-rickshaw? What we liked about Gangs of Wasseypur?
There are so many things that we liked about the movie Gangs of Wasseypur. Here are a few of them – – The movie is based in a small town called Birganj, a place where nothing exciting ever happens. It sounds dull, right? But that’s exactly what makes a good plot. In Gangs of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap has done a great job in creating a dull place where nothing exciting has ever happened and has then added some serious crime and gang wars to make it a brilliant plot. – The film is about the Bhumihar caste, who have been living peacefully for the longest time in this small town of Birganj. But now, due to some gang wars, they are about to face some serious social discrimination. – The cast is superb, with all the characters being very relatable and having some depth to them. There is also a very interesting love story in the plot that makes it more interesting. – The director has also done a great job in editing the movie. The editing is not just good; it is great. Almost every scene in the movie has been edited well.
Brutal beatings
The Bhumihar community in this town of Birganj hasn’t experienced any violence for years. But then, there is a change in the climate, and a gang war breaks out that involves all the castes in the town. That’s when the Bhumihar boys start getting beaten up and brutalised the most. This rises their anger and they start planning a revenge against the people who hurt them the most, the Thakurs. The Thakurs are a very influential gang in Birganj, and they have many supporters. When the Bhumihars start getting beaten up, they are helpless, because they have no support system. They have to entertain the Thakurs and also get paid for doing so. Their only option is to join the Thakur gang, and they do so, under one condition – they will get back at the Thakurs one day.
Outstanding performances
When starting a movie, the director often thinks about the lead pair and their on-screen chemistry. In Gangs of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap did this thing very well and cast actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Singh and Huma Qureshi. They all have done an excellent job in their respective roles, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui has given one of the best performances from an actor ever. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays Shubham Singh, whose character is basically about how every hard-working person in this world has to face some problems in their lifetime. He faces a lot of problems in the movie, but he always handles them with finesse. He is shown as a strong yet humble person who is willing to do anything to safeguard the honour of his family. Pankaj Singh plays the role of fellow Bhumihar, who is usually shown as a silent and meek person who keeps accepting whatever others demand of him. But in the movie, he is shown with a lot of anger and aggression, which is also pretty much true to his real life. Huma Qureshi plays a significant role in the movie. She plays Trishla Singh, a girl who is shown as a complete rebel. She is shown as a girl who doesn’t respect any law and thinks about doing whatever she wants to do, whenever she wants to do it.
Character development
Most of the films based on a town or a village show the people of that place as one single entity. They are shown as good people with no bad qualities in them. But the Bhumihar people in this town of Birganj are shown as very diverse in their personalities. In the movie, they are shown as angry, greedy, brave, loving and trustful people with different shades to them. How does a director show a diverse cast as one single entity? It is done with a lot of depth in the film. The emotions shown in this film are also very real. There is anger, love, trust and frustration in the movie. The director has also done a great job in showing the Bhumihar society as one that is governed by a strict patriarchal structure.

This has made them very arrogant and they have now started thinking that they are better than all the other castes. – – Violence never solves a problem – The Bhumihars have started getting violent in their protests, and have killed a few people in the process. But even after all this, the situation is not under control, and the police is not able to control the situation completely. This has made the government nervous and they have now sent some police officials from Patna to arrest the leaders of the Bhumihar gang war. – – Women are not meant to be treated like this – The film has shown how the Bhumihars women are mostly subjected to a lot of sexual harassment in their society.

The story of Gangs of Wasseypur is about how castes like Bhumihars are becoming the richest people in towns like Birganj. Their only crime is that they too have always remained oppressed in the society, and have never faced any discrimination. The Bhumihar caste people are shown as one of the most peace-loving castes in the country, who have been living peacefully for centuries with no trace of crime or gang wars. But all of this is about to change, since they are about to become the richest people in the town. Now, they are arrogant and want to start a gang war and challenge the Thakurs for supremacy. Gangs of Wasseypur is one of the most brutal movies ever, and has some superb performances from all the characters. This is the second time Anurag Kashyap has made a movie, and it is definitely the best one. The director has done a great job in making the movie, and has portrayed the Bhumihar caste people as very rich, prosperous and powerful people. He has also shown how they are not good people at all, and have started a gang war in the town.
